During the wood kitchen stove erra we had a number of those setting on the back side of the stove. My mother had a handle that would clip on and as she was doing the ironing and it would cool then she would just drop it off the clip on handle on the stove top and hook up another hot one.

Thanks for the replies. It does have a hole in the top on the other side. I thought maybe a log splitter. I'm guessing early 1900's maybe 1920. That's about the time period of things I have found. It doesn't make sense because the foundation is stacked stone and should date much earlier.
