I found this walking along the banks of the Raritan River at Raritan Landing, a major historical settlement in central NJ. I actually came across it 10 years ago and rediscovered it among my treasures trove today. It’s probably made of clay—seems denser and heavier than terracotta. I put a lighter next to it for reference. It’s been cleaned with a soft bristled brush so the orange-red color is natural to the piece. The darker brown color on the front—not sure if it’s weathered or if it’s glaze or paint. Any input would be welcome. I did submit it to a local archeological society and I’m waiting to hear from them. The dots and lines patterns are similar to a metal foot button found during an archeological excavation at the site but that’s the closest I’ve come. Thanks!!
