Most gold will not tarnish, so, if you had to soak it to get some "green" off, it isn't gold. Probably Brass or copper.

Yeah the tarnish was on it when I dug it up then the vineger took it off, I'm not sure what it even is to be honest lol what color tarnish

As stated by cudamark both brass and copper will turn green. Copper normally has a more bluish green tint and brass a bit more green. If I remember correctly. Subtle difference. When the tarnish is cleaned the metal should be evident.
I have many buttons tarnished and never clean them except with soft brush and mild soap if needed. I want them "as is" recovered. The value of some item can be diminished with harsh cleaning. Just something to think about, mate.

That's something for me to definitely remember thank you for that and no I normally do leave them in there found condition but in this case I was curious to see if it was gold lol

Most gold will almost always come out of the ground very clean. 14K and higher karat gold really doesn't tarnish to any significant degree. Lower karat gold will depend on what it's alloyed with. Even still, it usually doesn't tarnish much. If it's green and crusty, you can bet it isn't gold.
