It's 11pm here and my tired eyes can't decide between ramrod thimble or the nib of a pen.

EDIT: After a bit of a closer look I'm thinking it's a thimble. Here's a photo of a similar one:

Noah_D's guess (he said "can't decide" and "I'm thinking") is correct... your find is a brass "thimble" (a.k.a. ramrod guide) from a Colonial Era flintlock musket. Its size tells us it is from a musket rather than a flintlock pistol.

One of the key ID-clues is the presence of a notched (or holed) flat flange running along the brass tube's upper side. That is how it was attached to the gun's wooden stock. See the images below.

I knew it was a gun part when I saw the "IX" mark on it. Those are assembly marks so the parts ended up with the right gun since most all parts were hand fit and wouldn't interchange. Neat find! Gary

It's a thimble. Probably 1700s. I found a Similar one last year.

Actually it may be identical. I think mine was off a brown bess.
