Hello,

Can you tell me if this is gold and how I can find out if it is?

Thank you

That’s not always easy. You could do a streak test but that’s not always super accurate.

If it were me I would dissolve a small bit in aqua regia and test with stannous chloride. That would give you a positive or negative without doubt.

Could be. Two thoughts come to mind. First, crush some as finely as possible, pan it and see if the specks are magnetic. The other, more accurate way is to have it assayed professionally. Looks a lot like micro pyrite in a schist like matrix, but pyrite is often found with gold.

By what I can observe from the picture I would say pyrite. But I sure hope I’m wrong!

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Theresgoldinthemhills! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I moved ya from HELP! over to GOLD PROSPECTING for more exposure.
