Any ideas what this is?

4cm long and 0.3cm wide and non magnetic

It looks like a lot of the rusty nails I dig every outing... 😁

In addition to what's already been asked, can you do a scratch test and tell us more about the material?

Lensing suggests it may be (part of) an awl. :dontknow:
 

If it were rolled copper and hollow, I would suggest it's a Conical Kaskaskia Native point. It doesn't seem to be rolled or hollow, so I would guess an awl or generic piece.

I would agree with you that it is aluminum.
Buried aluminum gets a rotted look to it, sort of a cancer.

I wouldn't have agreed with aluminum--only because every piece--and I mean every piece--I've dug has been in nearly the same condition as when dropped. Extremely old pieces have had some oxide damage, but nothing like these pics.

So I'm thinking it may have to do more with the soil.
