Hi all, recently found this large Asian coin. "One Tael, Yun-Nan Province" . I researched this a bit and seems a lot of these are fakes. Some of the smaller markings on the reverse seem different than any other I've seen on the web, but thought I'd post it in case there are any foreign coin experts on here. This coin is non magnetic. Silver???

weighs 31.2 grams

..I see the spring dollar is of a different denomination. Supposedly the Yun Nan province never minted a one tael, which i guess would render this a fake, but I'm no expert with foreign coins

Weighs more than a 90% US silver dollar at 26.73 grams vs. yours at 31.2 grams. Yours weighs almost exactly 1 troy ounce.

I’ve done some research on your coin using some chinese language coin sites. There were a few posts with a coin which looked like yours. The consensus from the group members were that the coin is fake.

And I would agree with them. Here is why. On the front of the coin at the top it states
江穌省造 made in jiangsu province. However on the back it says yun nan province which are two different provinces.

The forum I looked at says this coin was probably made after 1912.

Info on the front of the coin says the following

Top: 江穌省造 (made in the province of Jiangsu)

Middle: 光緒元寶 guanxu yuanbao the coin currency of emperor guanxu (1875-1908)

Bottom: 庫平一兩 kuping yi liang.
庫平 kuping is a scale used by the national treasury as a standard in taxation.

一两 means one tael.

Hi, these are sold as novelty on Fleamarkets hereabout.

Chances that you fined a real Chinese sivler dollar are very very slim. Weight is right (one old chinese market tael is 31,x grams), yet taels were uncommon to start with.

For a small walk in to these coins:

Yang Hao- thanks for the de-coding ! So even being a fake coin, would it still be mostly silver content?
