The problem is he bought it on the word of a pawn shop that it is Atocha, no proof it ever was.
I missed the pawn shop part....So now that brings up another question. Who/why place real diamonds & Emeralds in a fake coin ???

There's sites that outline the fakes, tutorials on how to identify the real from fakes.
I'm sure that many sell on assumption that it's from the famous Atocha-meanwhile it could be a recovery from another wreck.
Not to diminish the fact that it could be authentic/or a knock off the thing is why would it be set in gold have authentic diamonds and emeralds in the setting if it was fake-just doesn't make sense.
The following link shows knock offs
There's videos on the fakes

It looks like some of the jewelry sold by the Fishers. They have rings and pendants with gold, diamond, and emerald settings.

They should be able to tell if the coin is authentic or a replica.

Just wondering if the Emeralds were real too. That plus the Diamonds, would make the replica a more attractive purchase, if documents aren't available

So does Mel Fisher keep records?
Yes, they keep records. But you need relevant info in order to find the artifact in question in their database. Under main menu, you would click on “search for artifacts”, then fill in the info you need to find the coin. Without that info, the database will be useless. However, you can email them and see if they can help.

What you will need to find anything, is the tag number….

It's not real, and has a number of features to suggest it's a copy of a 1715 plate fleet coin, with even some more changes to make it easily identifiable as a fake 1715-ish 8 reals. It looks really cool though, and might be worth some just as a piece of jewelry. It could have very well been cast from a bar cut or some very low-quality eroded coins.
