Went back to the 5th Ohio camp I found a couple weeks ago. Pickings are getting slim, but I did manage to find some keepers, including a flattened and carved .69 caliber mini ball and my second 5th regiment sutlers token. All in all, a good day.

Fullstock, Great Saves from the 5th Ohio camp. What's the story on the flattened and carved 69cal. bullet? I loved to find those carved bullets. We're these two pieces found together in the same hole? What a story this carved bullet could tell. All nice finds and saves. I like the Sutlers Token too. The screw, was this a screw from the wood off of a musket? This was a productive hunt. Continued Success.

Thank you Devldog. I found both pieces of the flattened bullet in the same hole, but I’m not sure what the soldier was trying to create when he made it, if you have any ideas let me know. The screw looks to be from the handle of a trunk of some sort. I really enjoy finding the .69 caliber minis, those things must have cause brutal damage if they hit you. Of course the sutlers token made the hunt for me.

That's the thing about finding carved bullets, it's fun to sit and imagine just what the soldier was trying to create with his knife. The pic. of you holding the carved bullet resembles a flame to me. Those 69 cal. balls could sure enough do some damage on their exiting the body. This is why amputations of limbs were so common in order to save the lives of wounded soldiers. These bullets would cause so much tissue and bone damage especially in joint areas such as elbows, knees, ankles, and shoulders, that the Dr.'s would have to result much of the time with removing the unfortunate soldiers limb. Horrible.
