Hello Forum,

It was a beautiful fall day in Upstate, NY. I went back to the 1830’s cobblestone house today and found a few interesting items. Thanks for looking.

Yes, middle one is a large button. After close inspection it once had gold gilt.

Thanks for the date range on the button Crusader. I was considering having it fully restored, but I don't want to ruin it. Does anyone have any experience with this?

It's well burnt-meaning that time/acidity of the environment/soils have taken a toll on the button.
The button can be called also a "Dandy Button".
Lots of buttons had a silver/gold wash on them, but the decades/centuries of acidic soils has eaten that wash away.
Not sure what you can really do with a button as this to restore the button back to some originality .

The soils has pitted/eaten the base metal to a point of dulling the features of the design.
To enhance those features you could try a conservator's wax, or even a oil of some sorts to enrich the features and bring the metal back some life.

Nice recoveries, and it shows the site has some long history, liking the tokens as well.

Not sure anyone would pay to have a button like that messed with, only a very limited options. Leave it.

Nice finds. I remember cobblestone houses near Lake Ontario where all the stones are rounded, about the same size, and in horizontal rows. Very attractive. Stones must have come from the lakeshore. I haven't seen such buildings elsewhere.
