On Sunday morning, I headed back to the site where I found the porcelain doll heads under the back porch last weekend. I took a small hand rake with me and dug out a few more pieces. In fact, I found parts of yet another dolls head and a few more pieces of my first head finds. I then proceeded to detect the side and back yard and found a nice horse rosette, a scale weight, an iron harness buckle and some modern coinage. In the pic of the back of the house, you can see the back porch in the left corner.

It remains a mystery to me as to how and why these early porcelain heads end up being discarded here. To me, the damage appears to have occurred from the freezing and thawing affects of being exposed to the harsh winter weather. I also included a couple of early rose head nails that I found on a site in Millhaven west of Kingston last Friday.

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Nice finds, rosettes are always fun to find! One of my favorite finds is in my avatar. It's a two piece rosette with a black glass center.

That rosette must've been an exciting find Hoagie. I've found a lot of rosettes over the years, but none with glass set into them. Here's one of my favourites that I found a few years ago. Love to see a close-up pic of the one you found.

A nice rosette Dave. If I remember the last time I drove on that road correctly, I got the impression that the development is moving West and getting there fast so good you got on it now.
I knew that you'd recognize this site Dallas, the previous tenant was a beef rancher. I remember the Angus Beef cows he kept here. You're right, the land development here is moving fast, but I doubt it'll jump the creek a kilometre east of the town. :icon_scratch:

That's a very nice rosette Dave. I love the detailed design it has and it seems to be in very good condition. Do you have a idea of it's age? My rosette is smaller. It's a two piece and the glass does have a chip in it. I'm guessing its age is from the mid 1800's to the early 1900's.

Very nice find ED.
Based on the 2-piece construction, I would think it dates to the 1880 - 90 period. This type of construction was patented in 1882 and production continued well into the 20thc. Here's one I found with a 'crystal' face, it likely had a picture of some kind inside of it.

Here are a few rosettes I found in 2017. The one on the left is a hand-made 'Canadian Beaver', the 'Heart' in the middle was likely attached to the horses blinker/blinder, the one on the right is of similar age to the one you found.
