Years ago, a Spanish ship filled with silver treasure was found off the south coast of the Bahamas where I am staying. I have dived that site and found parts of the ship. Yesterday however, I believe I may have found a real gem! At first I thought it was an old bottle, but when I picked it up it is very heavy and seems to have rust on the bottom where it was sitting in the ocean floor. I believe it is an old flintlock pistol. You can actually see the strike plate and hammer, along with the general shape of a gun. I’m wondering how to get it back home and then how to see if it really is what I think it is and then how to care for/treat it/preserve it. Any positive advice is greatly appreciated.

Until you figure out what you got, what to do with it, and how to preserve it.....keep it in a tub of distilled water, has no chloride ions and the salt that is in the artifact can begin a long leaching process....but dont let it dry out.
