Went out digging today at a farm I have permission for. Well didn't find much in the ground but did run across a corn crib in the woods and asked the farmer about it. He said he didn't remember it but I could dig through it. Well I found this right under the falling roof. I believe it is a 1859 Mcclean saddle. I think it is civil war period any thought would be awesome. Thanks for looking Ynp

Looks to be 20th century, almost unheard of to find a fully intact saddle from the civil war, if that is from the Civil War you got your self a banner find for sure. :occasion14:

I've seen Civil War Saddle Shields before but they were mostly plain this is got 12 inch on it.. Never seen that before, hopefully someone can 100% ID it, you say you found this under an old barn? it could have been stored there after the war then kept there til the barn was abandon, hard to say.

Very,Very nice !!!!! Congrats !!!! many years ago I found a couple of saddles from the 1880s & 1890s under almost the same circumstances and they were both from Colorado makers.

Looks old. Hopefully someone can date it. You know it's funny, I found a shield thingy like that one on an 1840s to 1850s property I've been hunting, looks like the same size but mine is iron and pitted really bad. Cool find.

I did know it is a McClellan saddle. I am hoping for some sort of dating signs. I have found McClellan shields in Calvary camps before both union and confederate. I know some of the early saddles were raw hide and leather in the bottom. But am unsure of how to date them due to the fact they had such a long period of use. Thanks Ynp

Are you near Fredericksburg/Stafford? I can have a buddy of mine who runs a civil war shop take a look at this for you and make an offer if you want too sell it, I'd love too see this and have an expert check it out.

Think you are right about a civil war saddle. Was partners in an antique shop a decade ago and my partner loved this stuff. She met a Hollywood tech. advisor/prop provider who traded us 6 of these plus a couple of old pack saddles for some other 1850-1870 stuff we had. I never took much interest and don't know a great deal about it, but she sold them all for several hundred dollars each to collectors(in that condition).

Hutsite- I don't live too far from there and work in Spotsy. I could make it up that way. Send me a pm maybe we could meet or your friend could look at the pictures and let me know what he thinks.
