Basic signs and symbols you have found

I am aware of a lot of you guys who chase the Spanish trails,
There are a lot of people who think we are as nutty as fruitcakes for doing it and can't see what we see.
Here is your chance to share a sign or two... Nothing fancy, just basic signs and symbols.
A little education as it were.
I know all of us are angry when a sign or symbol is destroyed or missing,
Here is your chance to share a little and help people to understand that by moving, altering or destroying markers and monuments the trail and the history becomes lost in time, never to be recovered.

Here is one to start the ball rolling

The top part by itself is a trail marker that says you are on the one true trail
It is also used as an omega symbol to signify the end of a trail.
But as you can see this one had a line under it which is an astrological sign for Libra or the scales
which was used as a Gold sign. The actual trail pointer is the end of the rock this sign is on.

Should be a good thread, no Spanish symbols my way though. Next you should do death traps. I saw the one you posted over on ALT, pretty cool!

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Rebel,

That site is OK if you are finding some signs,
But Many signs as I have said before aren't listed there or in his book.
I have collected over a thousand signs in the last 35+ years and am more than willing to share as many as I can with people along with what they mean as long as others reciprocate and post theirs as well.
I am also willing to help with meaning on as many as I can help with.

:coffee2:  Agree with you BOTH; just "posted" THU for general education purposes. REALLY need to see what pp have in terms of carvings, etc. BUT! Not everyone has a Digital Camera (aka "Digcam") to "post" these "goodies". Being in VIRGINIA, with NO DigCam, I have MOSTLY carvings on trees... SOME on rocks with dates like 1883, 1885... Carry On, Folks...

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

This one says travel down canyon to big water with a steep bank on one side.
It also points out the next marker but that part isn't in the picture,
Just the basic text book type stuff right now...

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Here is an eye symbol,

A little modified but still a good example.
The dot or eye ball points in the direction of the next marker.

Somebody else's turn...

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Thom,

I would post if I knew anything helpful. I'm not 100% sure about the meaning of anything I've found, so I can't say what it means. I have a feeling those who do know more aren't eager to share. Or maybe they just haven't seen the thread? Thank you for trying to educate the rest of us.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Here is a pig I found. Doubt it was carved, but could have been used as a directional marker on a trail going in.
It should be known I've never followed markers to treasure (or haven't found the treasure yet), so I have no "proof" any of these were ever used :)

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

This is an "X". If you know anything about Spanish markers you'll know what it really is. The treasure was dug up about 50 yards or so from here with heavy machinery. I did not find this, nor did I dig up the treasure, just took the picture.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Randy,

That is an awesome pig ! Look closer and see if his eyes are open.
Animals such as Pigs, Lions, Bears etc...will look towards a treasure site.
If the eyes are closed you are there.

Re: Basic Spanish signs and symbols you have found

Randy,
that 'X' is a variation of a "Barrier" or St Andrews Cross
as you can see
It will be incorporated with other signs that will give the location of a cache or mine site.

Very nice sign
Thom

(Note. ...If Spanish, a cross will be ALWAYS drawn with a double line. And , or enclosed in a box.
That is a rule that they had to stick to. there are several of these rules that apply. we will address them as we come to them.)
