Bicentennial In My Change!

Hey all,

Was looking through my change from the meet yesterday, turns out I got a bicentennial quarter in my change! It ain't the first time it's happened, and I hope it isn't the last!

I used to collect them and had over $30 worth but gave them to my youngest daughter. She was born in 1976. I never see them anymore in change.

Wow! This is the fourth one I've gotten in change, and the ninth one I've ever had. On the hunt for number ten!

Hate to burst your bubble but they are worth exactly 25 cents. There were more of them minted then any other quarter at least up to 1976. A lot of people hoard them and it's really a useless thing to do. Unless you just like the coin so much. I have had a number of face to face discussions on this issue. I think if you ask any coin dealer how many times people have gone to them with a hoard of them and expected to get a premium you would hear many stories. Followed by "they are worth 25 cents." I have actually been in a coin shop when that happened. Unless they are uncirculated or proof that is.

I still see these in change from time to time. I use to save them, and I may have a few hanging around, but i'm under no delusion that the have any value over face value.

Guess what??......Your quarter looks like a 40% silver one, that was made for the special "red envelope" silver 3pc. mint sets, ONLY 4,908,319 were issued.....only 11,000,000 total 40% silver ones were made, but several million of them were melted in 1982 by the San Francisco mint, so it has an "S" mint mark, am I right?......and look at the edge, you will not see a copper edge. It is .0739 oz. of pure silver, so at the current silver price today, it is worth over $2.00 melt value alone!; but is likely worth more than that to numismatic collectors..... That is a GREAT score........Here is a picture of my silver one still in the mint issued plastic:


Footnote: The silver ones weighs 5.75 grams, and the copper clad ones weigh only 5.67 grams.
