Is it possibly brass? It looks like the head off of a quail motometer from a early 1930 car. steve

Steve, its no type of metal, I guess I worded my reply wrong--its "heavy" compared to pottery shards BUT it also had a clump of dried mud inside--which made it feel heavier :) it has a sandy/grainy texture

I was looking for a seam on it is the reason I asked for better pics. Outside in natural light would be the best. You don't have to try and get so close to it with the camera it comes out blurry. Try again it might be a good piece or it could be modern I cant tell.

Could be just cave debri. All those mountains blow water out the sides right? Lots of hidden chambers and caves. If it is stone it would not be hollow if made by man. Google bird effigy of the south east. You are getting things that are natural but look like something. You will find stuff this summer I am sure...

The texture of it as seen in your first post kind of reminds me of an antler. That said, I am not in any way qualified to answer, but it's just a thought.

It could also be a bone of some sort. One way to test that theory is to see if it sticks to your tongue. It's not recommended for obvious reasons, but if you're desperate to find out...lol

Hope you get an answer soon :)
