I was convinced it's a snapped off candle holder but since I cleaned it I'm not sure; it has black enamel on it just like the CS clip corners did. Why would someone coat a brass candle holder black?

I don't know what it is! I used a bic lighter for your size comparison.

In the area we found no modern day or post war signals at all, all war era.

I have see pieces like that ID'ed as everything from parts of a candlestick to brass bed parts. I have also seen them in a museum that identified them as parts of a brass/glass kerosene lamp.

Looks almost like the mouth piece off of a bugle.
There were several designs.

I don't know. Something that came out of a surgeons amputation kit is what came to my mind :dontknow:

I would agree with that. I think it was White Post who has a lamp with a base stem that looks just like that.

I found candlestick holders today from the turn of the century, they aren't hollow all the way through so I don't think this is a candlestick holder at all.

It doesn't look like a piece of a bugle to me either.

Any other ideas?

I'm guessing candle stick. I have some from the period and they are hollow.
