Historically, there was a Mental Hospital located in the City of Camarillo, California...located along the coast southeasterly of Santa Barbara. (Ventura County)

Either there is more than one Camarillo State Mental Hospital or the brass tag is a long ways from home.

More than likely the tag for the key to ward B at the hospital.... The key was attached to it.

Maybe it's a patient tag, and a mental patient was attached to it...

Here's some info you might find interesting:

There are a few responses mentioning that tag and "Ward B":

This is what brought me to this forum! About 10 years ago I bought a oval Brass tag from Camarillo State Mental Hospital - Ward B and have been using it as a key ring ever since. I don't know anything else about it and am trying to find out more. I'd love to see some photographs of Camarillo.

Ward B was a men's barracks area which predominately held alcoholics and non-violent patients. "

Thanks for all your replies. I am also using it as a key chain. I do get lots of questions about it when someone see the writing on the tag LOL

Used them all the time in the middle to late 1980's

Here is a pic of the brass tag I found in Wisconsin that I posted yesterday 9/11/06

That is the key tag to "Ward B". When we would check into work each day we would get the keys to access the wards we were assigned to. At the end of our shift we would return the keys to security, for the next shift to have access to the wards.

I did my internship as a Psychotherapist at Camarillo State Mental Hospital which at the time was across the freeway from Everest & Jennings wheelchairs. Now neither exists in Camarillo, the hospital is now California State University Channel Islands and Everest and Jennings around the same time moved to Earth City, Missouri and Technicolor Labs moved into E&J's facility.

Don't Know the Years for Camerillo but I agree with the obvious Key Tag Theory
