Found this in an area where I have previously only found obsidian flakes. In fact I've never seen something of this material around here that I can remember.

Bummer that it's broken.
One day I'm gonna find something in one piece!

What you guys/gals think? Knife/scraper?

Looks like some nice crystal Quartz... They are cool to hold up to light and see all the flaking . hard to tell from the picture but I think it's the bottom half of a large knife / blade.

hmmm I suppose it could be quartz, which isn't rare around here, but is not so translucent and certainly not the normal artifact material.

Look at the first pic you can see my finger right through it....

anyway thanks for the replies I was happy to find this on my first day out. :)

Here's a piece of quartz crystal I found. You can see it actually grows like a crystal. Kind of cut like a prism

Hold onto it, you might find the rest of it. I just found the stem to another piece I found a week ago. Perfect fit :)

Welsbury; Thanks for that input...from my google-fu it very well could be.

Arrow86; That is a neat piece...but I would not think it's quartz, unless "quartz" is a wider term that I'm not aware of....that looks too smooth and glass like. The "quartz" I know is crumbly and couldn't be knapped like that.

Coosakid, I have some mineral samples like that as well....could not imagine trying to shape one, they would shatter, right?

BearCreek; I hear ya, I was actually in that location looking for the other half of a piece I found last year! lol

I was thinking, this is like looking for a needle in a haystack (actually worse)....but if you REALLY want that needle, you'll eventually find it. That is if you know it's really there.....

I was thinking agate, too. Sure doesn't look like quartz. Reminds me of the material in one of the huge Clovis points in the Wenatchee apple orchard cache. Looks like the basal end of a Morse knife, but not enough there to say for sure. Bear is right; hang onto it.

If it has a slick or greasy feel to it then its not quartz. Its the base to something imo.

Yes, it's slick, like chert/jasper.

Thanks all for looking !
