Thank youHi -- The leaf piece is a single earring, where the closure is on the top in front.. If the hinge is still working, it will have 'tension' in which to press down the ear wire in front, so that it opens.
Its from a old homestead i figured was from the 1860's , but they may have met a tragic end. Those are great close-ups -- thank you for including them. So it looks like the hinge is fragile and oxidized, so it may not tolerate any pressure. However, I often see this kind of hinge on mid to late Victorian continental jewelry, most often from France.
Repost or link that one up and let's have a look at it for comparison.I also have an item like this from a site that dated no later than the Civil War. I was told it was part of a candlestick holder, and marked it solved, but I still don't agree with that determination and think it was uniform or clothing related.
it was 2 feet away and its a button. we had found civil war ball buttons and glass beads near it as well. Even found 3 copper thimbles. It possibly could have gone on a Bracelet ot necklace . were the round coin like things found close to it ?
