It's a metal strip that was affixed to canvas machine gun belts (linked ammunition strips) so that the gunner could feed a new belt through the action to start the feed into the breech.

Wow, I was strictly thinking about a part on the gun itself. What a surprise.It's a metal strip that was affixed to canvas machine gun belts (linked ammunition strips) so that the gunner could feed a new belt through the action to start the feed into the breech.
