Spent one hour at a new permission, and this was the first signal I dug.
Can’t be more excited!
Can’t wait to get back and see what else is there.

There were also border war skirmishes with Missouri in this area south of Lawrence. This is suspiciously close to a slaver fort that was rooted out by a band of jayhawkers in 1856 as well
That is very cool local history, sounds more likely than my theory for how it got there then.... awesome recovery sounds like you have a nice area to hunt in good luck hopefully the box plate and eagle plate are in that field somewhere as well.

I'll be completely honest here. I have two in my collection that were given to me by one of my cousins who was an old relic hunter from Alexandria Virginia from around the centennial years. They came already cleaned and preserved. I would suggest watching some Utube videos on cleaning and preserving the brass. There are some good videos concerning this. Best of luck to you.
Getting back to cleaning the heavy dirt, I would brush this lightly with a soft bristled brush such as a toothbrush. If heavy deposits remain you may let it soak in hot water with a touch of blue dawn dish detergent. And go back over it again with a few brushings. You don't want to use a wire brush or harsh chemicals on the brass. Once you get it cleaned to your satisfaction, don't use any cleaner to polish the brass. You want to leave as much patina on the brass as possible, but I'm sure you already knew this. Give us some before and after pic's when you get a chance. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
What does everyone think about the back? Should I just toothpick the small deposit under the hook? The rest looks so solid and stable I would hate to mess with it in fears of disrupting it’s integrity...

Yes, this is cleaning nicely. Personally, I wouldn't attempt cleaning or brushing much further. You are correct in disrupting the integrity of this piece. The hairline cracks in the top photo that appear near your thumb on the pieces edge are the ones I'd be most concerned about. How has the front turned out?
