Still looking for my first. She's a beauty!
Thank you! I hope you can find one... I thought I would never find one here in Kansas... Shows you really never know what you will find.
It’s like the clouds parted and the sun shone down on me after I have been working very hard in my day to day.
Right as I dug it coyotes started howling in the distance and honestly it was an joyous, but eerie experience...

Great save of the U.S. Plate. It is in good shape too with all the hardware still intact on the back. It looks as though you are onto a good spot. This very well may have belonged to a returning veteran from the war. When you get the back cleaned examine it very closely and it may be stamped by the foundry from which it was manufactured. Congrat's on a great piece of CW History. It will surely display well.

Thanks devldog. How would you clean this properly?

I'll be completely honest here. I have two in my collection that were given to me by one of my cousins who was an old relic hunter from Alexandria Virginia from around the centennial years. They came already cleaned and preserved. I would suggest watching some Utube videos on cleaning and preserving the brass. There are some good videos concerning this. Best of luck to you.

Lot of the soldiers headed west after the war, big gold rush going on in Colorado at the time so probably made it out with the westward migration, the hardware on back indicates it is a buckle rather than a box plate. Very nice dig I've dug a box plate and an eagle breastplate but never found a CW buckle and I'm in Virginia so very nice job!

There were also border war skirmishes with Missouri in this area south of Lawrence. This is suspiciously close to a slaver fort that was rooted out by a band of jayhawkers in 1856 as well
