Burnt Ranch Lost Treasure in South Dakota

I found an article from the July 1, 2014 issue of South Dakota Magazine. It talks about the soldier that murdered a miner and buried his gold. I know where Sheridan is and approximately where Burnt Ranch is. What I have not heard about before is "O Valley". Supposedly the miner, Norman McCully, was transporting his gold dust from his claim in "O Valley". Does anyone have an idea of where or what "O Valley" is?

Could "O Valley" Be short for "Ohio Valley" ?

The Ohio Valley usually refers to the Ohio River Valley or that area that surrounds the legendary river. Some people will use the shorthand of the Ohio Valley to refer specifically to the upper part of the Ohio River Valley rather than the entire course of the River. The largest tributary of the Mississippi River, the Ohio River winds through six states and is 981 miles long. It begins in Pennsylvania and forms borders along Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois.

Interesting info Jeff. The way it is written in your posted article does make it sound like it could mean Ohio Valley. The article I found however says the gold claim was in O Valley. Maybe as the years have passed, the modern article is incorrect. Not sure. I will try to research O Valley more. If it is in the Black Hills, it would be an interesting place to explore.

I also see that the modern article has couple statements about the troops travels.
1- camped at Sheridan
2- Next stopping point is O Valley
3- On their way to Fort Benton

I might be able to figure out O Valley as a point in between Sheridan and Fort Benton.

Well I may have just figured out where O Valley is. The following screenshot is from a book titled: Black Hills Believables: Strange-but-ture Tales of the Old West
By John Hafnor. It appears that O Valley is Pactola.

Find a military map from the late 1870's. You were given a few locations in the story. A topo would be best.
