I don't know if you ever got a proper ID on this button or not, but it is a work clothes button off of a jacket or a pair of bib overalls made by the now defunct N&W Company, a clothing company that was located in Lynchburg, VA. There was no affiliation between it and the Norfolk & Western Railway.
Below is a photograph with a brief description of a jacket made by the N&W Company

If it is, then it's an unlisted one, and the only one I have seen that has a tin/iron back with a brass face.
So far as I know, they were made of nickel.

I imagine the one posted above looked like this one, which is an N&W work clothes button.

That is an awesome find! Why can't I find anything rr related while metal detecting? I find most of my stuff with my eyes! :tongue3: You work for NS? What division? Do you have any rr collectibles like lanterns, papers, etc? I am trying to get a seperate forum for anything rr related. You can reply what you think in the TNET Suggestion box in the topic " anyhting rr related" Good luck!

Maybe these will help to convince that this is not a railroad button.

I know this is an old thread but I found one of these buttons yesterday at a 1920's sawmill/lumber yard site I've been searching. It looks just like the one creskol shows above. I'm in the process of cleaning it now. I'll post a picture when I am done.

In my research I did find this information about the N&W Overall Company. It's a quote from a Government document of Historical Places in Lynchburg VA.

"The N&W Overall Company began manufacturing overalls (probably in Roanoke) for the Norfolk & Western Railroad in
1900 (hence the name)."

Here is a link to the document - http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registe...Kemper_Street_Industrial_HD_2008_NR_final.pdf
This quote is on page 20 of the document.

I thought it was interesting that this fact seems to make this button connected to both clothing and railroad.
