I found this button about 8 months ago in Warrenton, VA. I don't know much about it. The decorative dots are made of iron hence the rust. The rest is non ferrous and overall size is about a US Half Dollar + or - a little. No markings.

Buttons with riveted "cut steels" were seen a fair bit in the late 1800's, and many had not just historical figures but storybook figures as well. However, to an amature like myself that shank style looks older. Now if we could just read that signature beneath the guy (visible on the back).

That's a pretty tricky one to date... and of course dating it is a pretty key factor in determining who it is.

Not sure if that's writing below, doesn't really look like it.

Looking again at a close-up of the front I think IP may be right, I might have just been seeing the lines that make up the ruffles on the guys shirt. There's on line (on back) that made me feel sure it was part of a capital script letter, but given the detail on front I think I was just wrong.

I have rechecked it. I am pretty sure it is cursive writing on the back. It is hard to make out but I am working on it and I will hopefully have a better pick up soon.

These are more belated than I planned but it turns out that the button definitely has a name on the back side.
I can't quite make it out or read it but it looks like there are 2 cursive "0" s in the middle and a " L " or " T " on the end.

There may be a " G " at the beginning of the name as well.

I get the feeling I'm way off; like not even standing in the parking lot of the ball park; so feel free to disregard; but I see "SLAU JULY" on the reverse. St. Lawrence University ( est.1856) in Canton, New York goes by "SLAU". Did they make some buttons? And since this button looks stamped from the back to raise the obverse, shouldn't this be backwards? Maybe this will help someone else. Orange are the lines I see, green are the ones I made up.... I will look into that. I cant quite make out " slau july" but that does not mean it is not there. Glad you brought it up.

that button looks to be early judging by its size and image.I think in the early 1790's coat buttons shrunk roughly from the size of a half dollar to a nickel.I would say colonial. If that button is what i hope it is.That is definitely a banner find.whatever it is, very nice find.

I am hoping it is George Washington!Anything associated with him is Highly sought after.Like that George Washington inauguration Button on the banner with the eagle on it.I have never seen a example of anything George Washington Like the button you have,"assuming it may be"But there is allot i haven't seen. You "might" have something kind of rare there.I would keep looking into it.
