It look like what they would have put gun powder for there guns, however I'm not sure

Well I don't think it could be that old by the looks I guess

Those round head screws appear to be brass, if so definitely not old as in antique. Screws were hand made, one at a time, out of iron. The slot in the screw also doesn't look antique.
It looks to me to be a modern reproduction of a powder horn. Muzzle loaders became very popular around the time of the bi-centennial. Lots of people made their own accouterments.
