There was a handheld temperature indicator that used to be advertised in the Kellyco catalogue years ago. It enabled a temperature variation to be detected a few feet deep when pointed at the side of a hill. It would pickup the cooler air if a void was present on the other side of a covered cave. Are these still made and where or no longer available because they did not work
 

Sounds like you could do that with a laser thermometer. Not sure what the range is on them though.
