Okay coin guys, I'm a relic nut and I know very little about coins. Today I found my first Chinese cash coin and have been trying to ID it and date. I had no idea there were so many. I've looked at coins on line until I'm cross eyed and think I've got it but I'm not sure. Best I can tell is it's a "Emperor Sheng Tsu AD 1662-1722"
Take a look and let me know what you think. I'd love to know the year. Thanks for looking. IMG_20190106_145804528.jpeg IMG_20190106_145747934_BURST001.jpeg

Sorry can.t help with Chinese coins. Keep digging if you find a Japanese coin I may be able to help. Do people collect cash coins? I know there are Japanese collectors.

Thanks for responding. I have found one Japanese coin in 2015. I think it's called a 10 shen.

Definitely Japanese because of the flower. I will try and get date tonight, looks pretty new but sen has not been used in a long time. Can you take sharper pictures?

no way to know the year. the BAO ---roof thingy--- tells how to read the dynasty, emperor and minting city. they sell for a few bucks on Ebay. a few web sites give full info on reading----- or go to a Chinese place & ask a native to read it for you. I have had 3 Chi'en Lung cash coins sell for 2 to 3 bucks each

The reverse shows: "BOO YUWAN" (Board of Works mint). The Manchu mint name translates to Pao-yuan or "The Source of all Currency".

Don....
Thanks for the info Don. I had no idea there were so many different ones. It's been fun researching it.

Yes, you are correct. I checked with my wife. She said it is year Showa 16 = 1941 and 10 Sen

The Sen is no longer used. It takes 100 Sen to = 1 yen and right now 109 Yen = $1.00
Great info! Thanks

a good source for these old coins -

I bet I could find cash coins around my area in my little town. But it is all buildings, streets and parking lots now. We used to have a Chinatown in the late 1800's. But the white farmers and gold miners decided to run everyone all the Chinese out of town. They had a town meeting and sent them south to San Francisco.

Your coin is actually Boo-chiowan or Board of Revenue Mint, although it does look similar to Boo-yuwan on this piece. It is Hartill #22.87 made in the 1680s and 1690s. The coins don't have dates but with the Hartill book it lists the varieties which allow you to narrow down the date a bit more. Always happy to look up cash coins in the Hartill book for anyone.
