Civil war buckles

We found the 2 buckles a year ago at a deserted play ground in the same hole next to each other. We have not cleaned these except with mild soapy water. With magnifying glass you can read Rau F. CO. then on bottom PROV, RI. WE are curious does the inscription mean the battallion and are they from shoes or a satchel Thank you

I seriously doubt the buckles have any military or civil war association. The marks are merely maker marks, CW buckles were not marked to battalions or units by the buckle manufacturers. Thousands and thousands of various buckles lie in the ground, few with military use, most are civilian.
