The acorn was used a symbol by the 14th Corps during the Civil War. They were active in the western theater. Any chance they had men in the area you were hunting? Great and unique find, either way!

So, General Buell was, to my knowledge, in command of the union troops in Kentucky. I believe that ties it together here. I'm far from an expert though!!! Thank you!

It looks like that has a Japanned finish on it. When was that practice started? I know it was done on some Great Seal buttons.

Good observation. I think it started in Europe in the 17th C, by the late 19th C it was dyeing out in Britain, but I'm not sure when it was popular in the US? (It was all over in Britain by the 1920s)

That's a very nice find. I also concur it was a Civil War Union corps badge. They are hard to find and pricey.
