Hi all, hope everyone is staying healthy and getting out to do some treasure digs.
Had a chance to finally get back out to tackle a hole in this heat. Cooled off to mid 80s so it’s time to toss some dirt. And chop some wood. Talk about a pit full of roots. At least we knew that it hadn’t been dug before. Ha. Started out careful because a gas service line we knew was running parallel with the pit. Right under a decent sized maple tree. After the struggle with the roots and some serious hard soil we were at around 4 feet or so and started seeing some glass shards. A couple of bottle tops were found to determine the age was 1890 at the 4 foot level.

Got down a little further and popped out a broken fruit jar. Nothing special yet.......yet. Then out comes a broken The Hero fruit jar with the Maltese cross. Top was lopped off but I thought I can make a cup or something out of it. After pulling this out I was scraping at that same area and this hockey puck like thing rolled out. Had no clue as to what it was at first. Flipped it over and saw some embossing. Says The Niles Drinking Cup. Circa 1860. It was still closed. Still had no clue as to what it actually was but then popped the top off and saw that it was a collapsible cup. Opened it right up and it still works!!!! Awesome. It does have a small chip on the top ring but it still holds liquid. Researched it a little to find that soldiers used them in their knap sacks in the civil war. How cool is that. Wow.

After this we kept going down to the 5 -6 foot level. Popped out a nice little perfume and a really neat milk glass ship. The top survived but the bottom was missing a half. I think I’m going to try to make a bottom for it. Don got in and pulled out some medicines. Nice embossed meds for a change. Pulled out a couple of pint blob beers and then another crier of a fruit jar. The Empire with the top knocked off again. Ugh. Another cup in the making! Pretty successful day today. And another pit probed for next week digs. As long as the heat stays in the 80s. Good luck out there folks. Stay safe. Jgas. Great digs, man. That cup is something else, and to have survived in that condition is incredible. What type material is it made of?

Hey Sand, it’s supposedly made of hard rubber. Like plastic. Crazy it survived as good as it did. Thanks for the replies. Jgas
