20191215_123857.jpg I found this sword yesterday and was hoping to confirm it being a U.S cavalry .
I found it on a rock outcrop overlooking the river on my property . it was only in the ground 2'' deep and overloaded my machine with an iron tone.
I took these pic with my phone as soon as I figured out what it was.
I 'm seeking advice on how to clean or preserve it.
keep in mind it is stuck in the scabbard and soaking may not work because it can't be rinsed properly I have it setting in the area of the woodstove in an effort to remove all the moisture.
dig those large iron signals guys , the next one may be something good.. DSCN2476.jpg 20191215_123549.jpg 20191215_122946.jpg DSCN2475.jpg

thanks for the banner vote GaRebel1861 I was just down stairs fondling the sword and could hear sand rolling back and forth in the scabbard .
I sure hope to get it out of the scabbard without doing any harm .

Man what a great find . I would talk to an expert or some one at a museum or a university that this is there specialty at preserving this banner find. electrolysis may take some time but it would be worth it.

Thanks for the banner votes guys . I fear getting any liquid in the scabbard and then still not getting the sword out and having a huge mess on my hands. wd-40, vinegar trans + acetone all seem like they would help free the sword BUT what if they don't?

Incredible find, unfortunately removing the sword from the scabbard will most likely destroy the scabbard. I think I would just wash it off, leave it as is and enjoy it, I think it looks great the way it is. Congratulations!

I’d try some crows oil, run it down the inside of scabbard, and let it sit. Or you could try laying the entire sword minus the delicate pieces in a small tote full of WD or Crows oil. I’ve had amazing luck with it.

How many bullets or buttons did you find around the area of that cool sword?

I like what Fullstock said, leave it as is rather than risking any damage to the rest of it. Great Save  Banner!

DSCN2477.jpg Too late , while you were on here I was going for it and am happy to report success in removing the scabbard .
I'm very happy with the sword as it has just a little rust and is still pretty dang sharp.

I sprayed WD 40 and tapped on the iron tang with a nylon hammer. then wrapped the tang in electrical tape and clamped with vice grips .
tap, spray ,very light heat and repeat over and over. well guys DSCN2478.jpg here it is.

Boy that thing saw very little action. I don’t see any burrs, or marks on the blade where it may have been swung in battle. Is the blade engraved or plain?
