I went back to the playing fields I have been finding silver in lately and gridded a section on the far side of the field. I spent 3.5 hours swingin the CZ21 and did a decent job with clad, tabs and slaw, but the only interesting finds were a toy car and a toasty 1940 wheatie. I managed 28 coins with a face value of $2.43.

I left that field and went to another set of fields a couple miles away and spent 1.5 hours finishing my days hunting. This set of fields was totally reworked about 7 years ago with all dugouts and fences removed, the ground regraded and new fields set up. No silver here either, but I did get a few interesting items. 18 coins with a face value of $0.94, an old silver plate fork that was definitely involved in the regrading, a play money dime (Japanese hedgehog design), 2 pigeon bands, a copper clad bullet, a cheapie dog pin, and a dragon.

I have found several pigeon bands here before. All of them have been UPF bands (United Pigeon Fanciers) and from 1949 or 1950. These new ones are from a triangle or delta club by the symbol on the bands and from 1937 and 1948, my 2 oldest bands so far.

The dragon looks like it was the handle or at least a part of something else. It has a small pin on one part and a hole on the other so it could be attached.

Next trip was a short one to a set of small town ball fields about 10 miles south that I haven’t checked for a few years. They were working on one field and mowing the other so I did the tot lot and around the stands and concession area. I concentrated on the high tones and better mid tones. In 2.5 hours I found 67 coins with a face value of $6.40 a coal mine chit and a lock box key. This town was a coal mining town so the chit is no surprise.

Then it was back to the scout camp for my weekly tent peg fix:laughing7:. I spent 6 hours finishing a campsite and detecting around the staff area. I ended up with 124 coins with a face value of $9.22, 89 camp tent pegs, a stainless spoon, sinkers as usual, more spent blank cartridges (mostly pistol with LC 81 headstamp), a police pin, another Namco amusement token, a fishing lure, a rope tensioner, a dead scout knife, and tabs and melted aluminum. One of the pennies looks like it was hit by a 22 bullet.

I rolled a log out of the way so I could check underneath for goodies and found a little friend. A nice 5” long Northern Red Salamander. It was cool so he was a little sluggish. I tucked him under some leaves with a piece of tree bark overtop to help keep him warm so hopefully he will be ok.

The next day at camp I went to a different section of camp and worked for 6 hour around the trading post. I did a quick job on this in 2019 when I was there with the troop. Scout kept gathering around to watch as I kept digging up coins and tabs along with a few blank cartridges. I felt like the pide piper as I swung my detector and explained what was happening. I couldn’t grid because of the group around me and I had to keep asking them to move back so I could swing the detector (the guys were curious and anxious to see what came out next). This trip no followers in camp, just me. As I gridded the area I managed 181 coins with a face value of $12.46, 20 camp tent pegs from the edges of the woods were some tents had been in the past, another group of blank cartridges, a clevis pin, a wheatie, 4 leather stamp tools, a tacoed dime, a hat pin back, a home made throwing knife and a nice handful of tabs.

The blanks are the same types and headstamps as ones I have found elsewhere in camp. The ranger believes that a group of reenactors was in camp about 15 years ago and may have fired the blanks as part of their program on the activity field where I found hundreds of them. The scout probably pick some of the cartridges up as souvenirs and then lost them. The ranger is going to check with some friends and see if that is indeed the case or if some other activities produced the spent blank cartridges.

The throwing knife looks like it was hand made like the all metal throwing tomahawk I found very close to where the knife was found. Both were originally painted yellow to help find them when they missed the target.

Again no super finds, but I’m still out there swingin. Raking in the clad and tent pegs, along with more spent brass. Only 2 weeks left in my detecting year and I’m hoping to end with some winners. I’m going to need a lot of luck. As always good exercise for the old man in the fresh socially distant air. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.

Man,I like those pigeon bands!Hell,I like everything you found!Nice, very nice!

Thanks crashbandicoot you are very kind. I like the pigeon bands as well. I’m not always thrilled with the stuff, but it is always interesting. It can be fun trying to figure out what the finds really are. I’d love to know what that dragon was a part of. Stay safe out there and keep swingin.
