OK. The last few posts were about my lastest form of treasure hunting. I was calling it "car washing" but over the last few days, I have been referring it as "snipe-ing". It seems to be exactly what it is that I am doing. Anyway, the coin count stays steady and I had an initial wish list as I sifted through the sandy, stinky, damp crud that I call paydirt. Wheat pennies? CHECK. Silver jewelry?CHECK. Yesterday I found a 14K GOLD crucifix and a 14K GOLD earring. So... CHECK! All I need to find are some silver coins now. This is proof that it is a viable hobby. The car wash people already know this and that is why they have padlocks on their machines. During the last few days of me trying this here in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, I have noticed that the car wash business' lock up their vacuum cleanouts. Gas stations for the most part do not. I am posting a few photos of what I have experienced in the 4 days of snipe-ing. I hope a few of you will at least try it. I have logged in over $80.00 in clad coins so far in 4 days, (with silver and gold as well.)

PHOTOS:
1) Fake ring. Proof they drop them in the car!
2) Coin Op and coin full vacuum units.
3) 5 Gallon buckets of "paydirt"...toe nails and all!
4 & 5) Clad coins
6) GOLD cross and earring found in paydirt. (did I mention its 14K)
7) Sifting and recovering
8) CoinStar with one of the tallies of a vacuum cleanout.
9)More clad coins!

Colonel, what a cool idea! At first when I looked at your post I was thinking, this guy owns/works at carwash. Am I understanding that you are going to a gas station with a vacuum and just opening it up?

Ok, so you just pull up to the vacuum and start cleaning it out? Is this a daytime or night time hunt?

Is it legal to do that?

when he does't post any more we will know why he'll be siting in jail lol

Yes.. there are no signs that say I cant. I am cleaning it out for free. No one has said anything...yet.

I posted a few days back about the areas on the property of these car washes - where the owners/managers dump the contents of the canisters ,
any luck finding these enclosures ? they usually are quite accessible ! mounds of detectable dirt in a shallow enclosure of some kind at the back
corner o the car wash lot - these are LOADED with change , junk , jewelry , etc.

DAY TIME. Night time would just seem sketchy. A free service! Besides, do you really think the 17 year old attendant wants to put down his phone and clean out the machine? Heck no! Ha ha.

So do you take the junk back after its sifted so they don't catch on? I would take some of the quarters back with me and leave the junk in the buckets on the floor of the car and just suck it back up like I was cleaning the floor boards.

No need. I dispose of it all and will head back in a few weeks. After all, each shift probably thinks the shift before theirs did it for them. ha ha

There are no signs that say not to do it so until they tell me not to, I will do it. I do actually want to approach the managers to get actual permission. Until then, I am giving them a free service.

Its not like I am emptying the coin box. I am taking the trash out for them. I dont break anything. I am not jimmying locks. I am simply "unclogging" the vacuum for better suction!

Nice finds thecolonel.

I gotta try this LOL

As the saying goes "Someone's trash is someone's treasure", and this confirms it!!!!!:laughing7:

IF YOU ARE GOING TO TRY IT.....READ THIS:
Be low key about it. Pull up like you are going to vacuum your vehicle. Like any form of treasure hunting, you want to fly below radar. Have your bucket ready and "service" only the machines that are not locked up. Obey all the signs posted, though I havent run into any as of yet. Without attracting attention to yourself, calmly open the cleanout and remove tray, or if there is no tray, scoop dirt and all into the bucket. Take all trash, good or bad. Leave no trash behind. When you have collected it all from the canister, be sure to close the cleanout door. Latch all latches and clean up any debris that may have hit the ground. I am sharing this with my brothers and sisters here on TN.com because you are in the hobby. I usually am not advertising this to the world. Good luck and HH.
