🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Colonial Buckles?

Hello,

I recently acquired these buckles. They were dug in farm fields in Northern Massachusetts. See attached picture. I am wondering what age/era these are from, and what type of buckle (shoe, knee, belt). I am no expert and I really appreciate your help.

You've got lots of different ages and types of buckles shown here.
I see everything from an early 18thc buckle, horse tack and harness buckles, to early-20thc sash buckles.

This example is likely the oldest of the bunch.

Would you say these are horse tack circa 18th century? #2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9. (refer to my initial picture)

#7 is the 20th cent. sash buckle you mentioned?

#4 is early 18th cent. buckle. What type of buckle do you think this is?

Without personally inspecting them, I'd say have to say the buckles numbered #2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 are all mid to late 19thc. It's challenging to precisely date these types of buckle designs, mainly because they've literally been produced for over 100 years.

Yes, #7 is likely to be either a dress or decorative sash buckle c1900 give or take 20 years.

Yes, #4 is an 18thc buckle, it may be horse related, but also may be a utilitarian buckle used by folks at the time.

Agreed, the spectacle buckle no.4 might just cross into the 17th C.
