I searched a wooded area that used to be a farm homestead this past Sunday. My favorite find was this complete powder flask with an embossed image of a deer on both sides. It is only about 5 1/2 inches long, so I suspect it is for a pistol or small game rifle. I doubt this is a dropped modern reproduction, so I am guessing 1850s to 1870s. Also found a large, mostly complete crotal bell with pedal designs on the lower half (1700s or early 1800s?), a couple buttons, including a small shiny tombac, several small buckles, a Melba compact, and a couple wheat pennies. The obscene looking item is a ball tip for a Hames horse harness, while the other object might be a brake handle tip or something similar. Happy hunting and good luck out there.

Finds of a lifetime for me. Could the "non obscene" piece be the end of a walking cane?
Thanks. It could be the end of a cane. There are a number of possibilities, but I was thinking something wagon or furniture related.

Very neat! Incredibly rare to dig one of these intact.

that looks like a Fallow deer - not native to North America
Thanks! That’s a great observation. I thought the antlers looked a bit off. Perhaps this flask was imported or brought to the states by an immigrant. FB2E9652-0705-48A8-A90D-400DE819419E.jpeg

More nice finds lenmac! One of the nicer dug flasks that I have seen. The non-obscene piece is a cart shaft tip I believe.

Thanks! Cart shaft tip sounds very plausible. I too was thinking something along that line.

Tiny bit of restoration work & that flask will be worthy of the front & center spot in the display case! You had an incredible hunt, hope there's more for you!
Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, I lack the time, tools, and talent to do a proper restoration. Regardless, it is looking nice on my bookcase propped up on the mini plate stand.
