Confederate Grave Marker

I bought a pile of stuff at an auction and I found this in the pile. I thought it was pretty interesting. Apparently these were given to Confederate families in the 1880s and 1890s because they couldn't erect a headstone or something, and then the US passed something in the early 1900s that they could do a headstone, so these were replaced with headstones or something like that. Anyone have anymore information on it? It's heavy cast iron or something similar.

Yep Southern Cross of Honor. Placed on graves of Confederate veteran. Not replaced, almost all in circulation were stolen from the grave.

Very cool but if you displayed that on your front porch across from me we might not get along to well lol.

I have my Great Great Great Grandfathers “Grand Army of the Republic” cast iron grave marker next to my front door, in the planter. We replaced them with copies so the originals wouldn’t get stolen off his grave.

It’s definitely a neat piece of history
