I had a great day near Cold Harbor with some bullets, some buttons and my first capped bust half dime, even if it's nearly as slick as a whistle! One of the buttons is a Rhode Island Staff Officer's cuff, my first, and that really made me happy!

The video of the hunt is here:

Now that's a great assortment of finds. Question about those tinned sheet iron buttons in the center. I have read that those type were replacement for the older pewter molded underwear buttons....Is that correct, and are these type often found at CW camps? I have dug a number of them at period sites that had CW activity and now my curiosity is sparked.

Makes one wonder how a button like that travels to Virginia- one of the awesome things about this hobby. That half dime had a rough life and is an excellent find- Congrats!

I cant speak to whether or not they were replacements for anything, but that makes sense to me. What I CAN tell you is that they are VERY often found in civil war sites. I have found them in campsites, on battlefields, once in a battlefield burial and I once even found two side-by-side on top of a trench. I figure some old boy soiled himself and left his shorts right on top of the trench! Thank you for your interest and the reply!

Nice finds! Looks like you are in a great location to keep you busy all winter.
I wish. I have been hunting this place for 2 days in the spring, and 2 days in the fall (between crops) for 9 years! I only get on average, 4 or 5 days a year in these fields. But I look forward to it for 6 months!

I like seeing the round balls. Poor guys were still shooting smooth bore muskets. That is tough stuff. I think the percussion caps are cool too. It shows they were firing their guns in battle not camping.
Interesting site.

Thanks Jeff. This farm has produced buttons from Maine, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island and even Massachusetts! I can only assume soldiers from those places all camped here at one time. It sounds like you know something about coins. What is the date, do you think, on the half dime? I could really use an expert here. Cant be 1863 because that coin wasn't being minted then, right? What do you make of that date? 18 ? 3

Yes! Very cool place. A lot of early-war stuff, Tennessee!
