It is definitely a button.
I think some European countries used buttons with numbers like that if I remember correctly, but they are fairly modern.

One was nailed to the window sill and the same number was put on the storm window and the same number tack on the wooden frame of the screen. That way they would get the storm window and screen in the correct opening.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't able to find it- but yea- it looks like those.

Love this hobby...learn new stuff all the time.
