could this be fake? it looks too tarnished for 14k

Found this at an auction and thinking about bidding on it but it looks fake. I can't touch or test it....any thoughts? ( it has the heading "14K Gold Tone Necklace..18 grams". I'm new to this world so if I'm asking a stupid question I apologize in advance. Thanks.

I'd trust your gut on this one. 14k Italy is the most common fake mark. So that and the tarnish would tell me its likely a fake and I'd not bid on it. The more red flags then the more likely its fake.

That does not look real. I pulled a gold ring out of limestone and it had probably been there for years that looked better than that.

"Gold Tone" means that it is "plated" gold.......not real.....that was your first "Big" clue

sadly there s a lot of "fake " 14 k Italy herringbone necklaces out there it seems. found one at the beach a while back myself -- boy was I disappointed once it sank in "fake".--however the beast on the left * was 925 sterling all 12 oz of it --yep 3/4th of a pound of sterling.--heck at first I thought it was a chrome plated dog choker chain --then the magic mark 925 sterling. and that's a standard 12 inch long wooden ruler under it.

I agree that it is a fake. Also, if genuine 14kt Gold, I believe that due to the thickness, width and length of the necklace, that it would weigh a lot more than 18 grams!

"gold tone" should be a clear indicator

Anything following K or Gold is usually an indication of plating. 14k HGE, 14k Filled, 14k. But gold toned, heck, it may not even be gold at all. Bid $.50 and not a penny more.

First ring I ever dug about gave me a heart attack. HUGE, heavy gold women's ring. Quick wipe of the inside I saw "14K" and thought I had hit the jackpot! Ran it under water, only to read "HGP" (Heavy Gold Plate) ... Crushed. I HATE fake gold.

Well you said it yourseld in the description...."Gold Tone", which all it means is...Looks like gold. At least they arent trying to claim it as solid.

But yes...Def Fake..its that gargbage you would get from the Flea Market

I'd be surprise at most auctions, if they displayed a dirty real Gold necklace since the objective is to get as much money as possible. Also, their displaying it as an individual piece is outrageous. It should be included in a pile of junk jewelry. Seems like they are trying to trick some unsuspecting fool into paying way too much for it.
