Todays beach find, it looks like 8 reales, but it has a hole in it as if were worn as a pendant and it looks like its showing signs of flaking.

I can scrape off the metal around the edge under my fingernail, would this make it silver?

It looks plated to me. Based on that picture and comparisons with pictures of other pieces online. Use some silver polish on it and find out.

It is plated, I can tell because the gold plate is flaking off. I was wondering if someone would go ahead and plate an actual silver reale, have you ever heard of someone actually doing that ?

Check to see if it's magnetic.

Also, grab a silver coin of the same weight and test the sound when dropped, or what your detector says when you pass both across the coil.

Other than that i'd say you'd need some chemical testing to check the metal type. Anyone else know ways to test it?
