Couple of Keepers for the Button Collection.

Got out with a couple new friends in our area who also metal detect. We drove out to an old Stage Stop that was in use from the 1850's and was finally bypassed around 1870. It has been a livestock area ever since. We have had some great finds in this area over the years but the weeds are all ready tall. Not a lot of coins today but we did manage a few targets. I was able to grab an 1893 IHP and a couple buttons. The first is an old US Coat Button that is small as heck. (This is the second one I have found here so I gave it to one of the guys since he doesn't have one)

The second button is one we have not found out our way yet. It is marked Ordnance Corps with two cannons and I think a cannon ball. The back is marked W.H. Horstmann, Philadelphia PA. They both cleaned up nice. Any info on the Ordinance Corps would be appreciated. Thanks.

Been quiet around here so were trying to get out a little more......weather permitting!

That ordnance corps button is really nice! A quick search revealed it was worn by Union officers involved in the development and procurement of ordnance, 1850's to 1860's. The cannonball is described as a flaming bomb, note the flames at the top. Cool.

And the US button is listed as a pre Civil War great coat button. Albert's book # G171A.
