Curious metal thing ?

I can't figure this one out . I can't find any markings on it . Any ideas ? Thank goodness it's not shaped like an acorn !

It's a Machinist jack used to position parts on a mill or shaper. It is missing the swivel foot that rides on the ball. BB

Being it has no paint or plating on it usually means it wasn't something purchased.
It's most likely one of the projects they assigned us to make when going through school to be a Machinist or Toolmaker.
