Danimal's Lunchtime digs-PART UNO

As some of you have read on my earlier posts, I usually go out for an hour at lunch during the workweek. Finding good hunting grounds is difficult, as it has to be close by in order for me to have enough time after driving to make it worthwhile. Around March of this year, I found where there were three homes torn down in the early 70's and the area is now heavily overgrown and wooded, completely unrecognizable for what used to be there. The only reason I stopped to begin with was because I saw two huge old oaks about 30 ft apart amidst the other smaller tree growth, and figured it looked like planted oaks in someone's front yard (and I was right)
There's SO MUCH trash back there it's frustrating, but recently I have narrowed down some "hot spots" and have come away with (up until today) about 2 dozen wheaties and one 1949 Rosie, two buffalo nickles as well as some late 60's clad. Also I have found 3 nearly complete 1950's capguns and 2 broken up old airplanes, a badge off of an old Western Flyer bicycle (which is now on the front headtube of my son's mountainbike!) and several old bottles from a local now-defunct soda manufacturer.
Today I tried hard to visualize what the area looked like back in the 50's, and tried to imagine all the smaller (4" or less) diameter trees gone!...that suddenly made the backyard area stand out, and in the middle was a large old crabapple tree. I hadn't THed around it before because of SOOO many fallen branches and trash. After spending some time clearing the debris, I started getting good hits. First was a 44 Wheatie...then part of a 50's capgun....then most of a harmonica (I was getting excited by now)...then a rifle cartridge....then an old toy car (not too old I think because of it's futuristic style)...then, thinking silver quarter by the sound and ID, I freed a nice sterling ring surrounded by linked hearts.
I glanced at my cell phone's clock, and thought I'd better be going!...as I moved a foot or so, I got another sweet belltone. From about 6" came the beautiful sterling baby's ring, again with a heart in the center and intricate scroll work around it!
No doubt there's more there....I'll be back tomorrow. ;D

Re: Lunchtime hunt sucess!!...zeroing in

Hi Danimal
Nice rings. Sounds like a great spot. Remove as much trash around those hot spots, (thats always fun), and I'm sure there are more goodies.

Today and today only, Honest Dan's used car sales has SLASHED prices. No downpayment! No credit check! In fact, all ya need is a Lesche and a signal!
all found at lunch today in my "spot" discussed above.

Re: Lunchtime hunt success!!...zeroing in

I have looked into the value of some of these late 40's early 50's Tootsietoys, and I was surprised!....too bad some wheels are missing :(

Re: Lunchtime hunt success!!...zeroing in

Re: Lunchtime hunt success!!...zeroing in(with updates when dug)

Well,
Today's lunchtime hunt started with me isloating a back side of what I think was a garage on one of these foundations. Previous finds ranged from the 1930's into the early 70's, so I figure the house was demolished perhaps mid-70's. This fits in with the 3-4" diameter trees growing in what used to be the back yard.
This area by the garage was so loaded with signals that I have passed on it in my many hunts here because of how crazy my ACE250 went. Today I slowed down, and tried to isolate decent coin signals from the ferrous low tones. After digging a 1960 memorial penny next to a big ferrous target, I then removed the ferrous target, an 18" long rusted iron bar. Then another similar bar a foot away. THEN the good signals started to appear. Second coin was a 58D wheat. Then 6 more memorials, ranging fron '59 to '73. Satisfied that the area (these were all in a 2ft sq. area) was cleared, I moved off to the side a bit and started digging pulltab after pulltab. Again, decent signals appeared. First an old Cadillac key. Then another old (1950's) Tootsietoy car hotrod. Then wham!...a 1940 Merc...then low and behold, and undated Buffalo nickle. While digging the nickle, I saw the edge of the serving platter, and was surprised that it came out of the ground intact. It was made at a local china manufacturer. I haven't done any research yet as to it's age.
I opened my cell phone and saw it was time to (uggghhh) go back to work. Plenty there for Monday at lunch!
HH all.

Re: Lunchtime hunt success!!...zeroing in(with updates when dug)

I was in the old foundation in the woods area of my lunchtime hunts yesterday (Sunday) and although I promised myself I'd save the spot for workdays, decided to hunt it for a few hours before dark.
The 5 quarters were all late 60's. Same for the memorials, including three 1959D's....(those quarters were all teasing me)
Nickles were all 1960s
The three wheats were 44, 55 and 56
Struck silver again, with the 1957 Rosie.
neat find was the tiny hammer!!

Heading back there today at lunch!

Dan, you are a metal detecting junkie. Question is when do you eat? And how can you get to the spot, detect and get back within an hour?

By the way - nice finds and nice pictures. ;D ;D

Bob-I don't eat at lunch!
This spot is literally 4 minutes from work. I get there, apply bug juice and walk right into the woods. The foundation is less than 50yds from where I park.
I'd be glad to show you the spot!
Metal detecting is the PERFECT hobby for someone who seems to always have and hour or two free between other things you HAVE to do.
I am working on my picture-taking techniques, emulating perhaps yourself, who posts perhaps the nicest finds pics on the 'net
