No I believe the huge FBI response was in response to the State getting so much beef from the treasure hunters. There were a lot of legal issues to straighten out. Why the FBI responded the way they did is beyond me. I have several really large depositories to recover and they only threatened me with jail from the Under Secretary all the way down. They said to leave it alone.
How did they find out what your up to?

I contacted them to recover the maps from my great grandfather's grave which had the name of a soldier that survived the prison camps during the Civil War. The maps was buried at the foot of his grave because he was a double bodyguard for both Presidents and he had the locations of 58 depositories. I tried doing a DNA Test which they would not allow. They said another soldier was buried in the grave with a different name than what was on the headstone but they still would not permit me to do anything without a US District Court Order which only cost $350. but if I lost the case I had to pay for all their legal expenses including airfare, other transportation room and board and all their expenses and attorney fees. Seeing this could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and maybe even millions, I have let it go. These PA Hunters are liable to run into the same situation if this does go to court. As I said I hope they have really deep pockets.

well it's my understanding that it was A) on government property
and B) part of a US military payroll
C) they needed permission to dig
Did they really think they would get to keep property of the US military or US Treasury?
Far less 50 million in gold?
Quite naive in my book. And the FBI does as it pleases - we may not like it but
they do. So let this be a lesson to other THer's reading or watching this drama
play out. Every cache hunting book I ever read said the same basic thing -
go in, remove the treasure, replace the soil and rock exactly the way you found
it, and tell no one about it. How many people today can do that? Not many
I'd guess. Whole thing sucks but this is the way I see it.
Ocean7, You would be correct about government military property. If anything like that is found, 100% goes to the US Government of the find, but you would get a 50% split of the value of the find. I have all this from the GSA. That is if it is on US Government Property. If it is on other land then you have to deal with the landowner and give them a percentage of your 50%. So you end up with a small percentage. Since, this treasure is supposedly on State of PA property, they have to be dealt with also. Since the State of PA is not requesting anything found from the FBI we can safely assume nothing and I mean NOTHING was found. The treasure hunting equipment used by the treasure hunting group, I own and have owned the same equipment. The GPL used by them to supposedly locate a large deposit will give false readings, everything around sand, sandstone or quartz will show up as PURE GOLD when no gold is present. Their other method was dowsing and there have been arguments for years on this forum over it's use to try and locate treasure. Other than that a few holes drilled and photos taken in the holes or cavities, there is no verifiable evidence of treasure. I do not believe this case will ever go to any court. If so a third party of the State Department that owns the property will have to be included. And all the cost of this is enormous.

I've made many trips into that area. Admittedly it makes no sense to haul with wagons gold bars into those mountains. Payroll with gold bars?
My partner John Stevenson held one of the gold bars in his hands. John was no fool. The finder would file off some gold and sell it to a jewelry store in Saint Mary's as he needed cash. He believed gold bars were buried with the Lt. The grave is on Private property. I found that site. I'm not digging up a grave. It's a very long story.
A message for DP. The TV show and the fame you seek is not worth it. When you broadcast all this years ago you made your choice. Fame. What that get you? Over 80 million watched my show around the world. What that get me. My own wife refuses to watch it.. Hey honey the shows on. I've seen it she says. Ha! If you can't get your own wife to kiss your ass what good is it. So I now go prospecting in the Superstitions and give her half the gold. That she likes.
My best friend found the Lost Dutchman Mine. I held a 30 oz piece in my hand. There are those who refuse to believe it. I suggest you move on and next time choose the gold.
