No I believe the huge FBI response was in response to the State getting so much beef from the treasure hunters. There were a lot of legal issues to straighten out. Why the FBI responded the way they did is beyond me. I have several really large depositories to recover and they only threatened me with jail from the Under Secretary all the way down. They said to leave it alone.
How did they find out what your up to?

I contacted them to recover the maps from my great grandfather's grave which had the name of a soldier that survived the prison camps during the Civil War. The maps was buried at the foot of his grave because he was a double bodyguard for both Presidents and he had the locations of 58 depositories. I tried doing a DNA Test which they would not allow. They said another soldier was buried in the grave with a different name than what was on the headstone but they still would not permit me to do anything without a US District Court Order which only cost $350. but if I lost the case I had to pay for all their legal expenses including airfare, other transportation room and board and all their expenses and attorney fees. Seeing this could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and maybe even millions, I have let it go. These PA Hunters are liable to run into the same situation if this does go to court. As I said I hope they have really deep pockets.

well it's my understanding that it was A) on government property
and B) part of a US military payroll
C) they needed permission to dig
Did they really think they would get to keep property of the US military or US Treasury?
Far less 50 million in gold?
Quite naive in my book. And the FBI does as it pleases - we may not like it but
they do. So let this be a lesson to other THer's reading or watching this drama
play out. Every cache hunting book I ever read said the same basic thing -
go in, remove the treasure, replace the soil and rock exactly the way you found
it, and tell no one about it. How many people today can do that? Not many
I'd guess. Whole thing sucks but this is the way I see it.
Ocean7, You would be correct about government military property. If anything like that is found, 100% goes to the US Government of the find, but you would get a 50% split of the value of the find. I have all this from the GSA. That is if it is on US Government Property. If it is on other land then you have to deal with the landowner and give them a percentage of your 50%. So you end up with a small percentage. Since, this treasure is supposedly on State of PA property, they have to be dealt with also. Since the State of PA is not requesting anything found from the FBI we can safely assume nothing and I mean NOTHING was found. The treasure hunting equipment used by the treasure hunting group, I own and have owned the same equipment. The GPL used by them to supposedly locate a large deposit will give false readings, everything around sand, sandstone or quartz will show up as PURE GOLD when no gold is present. Their other method was dowsing and there have been arguments for years on this forum over it's use to try and locate treasure. Other than that a few holes drilled and photos taken in the holes or cavities, there is no verifiable evidence of treasure. I do not believe this case will ever go to any court. If so a third party of the State Department that owns the property will have to be included. And all the cost of this is enormous.

I've made many trips into that area. Admittedly it makes no sense to haul with wagons gold bars into those mountains. Payroll with gold bars?
My partner John Stevenson held one of the gold bars in his hands. John was no fool. The finder would file off some gold and sell it to a jewelry store in Saint Mary's as he needed cash. He believed gold bars were buried with the Lt. The grave is on Private property. I found that site. I'm not digging up a grave. It's a very long story.
A message for DP. The TV show and the fame you seek is not worth it. When you broadcast all this years ago you made your choice. Fame. What that get you? Over 80 million watched my show around the world. What that get me. My own wife refuses to watch it.. Hey honey the shows on. I've seen it she says. Ha! If you can't get your own wife to kiss your ass what good is it. So I now go prospecting in the Superstitions and give her half the gold. That she likes.
My best friend found the Lost Dutchman Mine. I held a 30 oz piece in my hand. There are those who refuse to believe it. I suggest you move on and next time choose the gold.

After reading all this and the current saga regarding the Dent's Run gold, my conclusion is that the group is more in this for a TV show deal / book deal...they keep talking about TV deals and books on all their current stuff...and hyping their shows instead of focusing on the truth...If I was embedded in a court battle with the FBI for "treasure" last thing I would be doing was parading around on TV shows and books and such about the story, until at least after the court case has been decided.

Yes, it is all about the story. Nobody is going to be allowed to keep the gold if they find it, Goverment will take it for sure. So all that is left is the story, just like Oak Island, no treasure just story, or the spin-off about a train car full of gold going into the great lakes. Or maybe it's just the way things are done now, just look at FTX, Sam Bankman Fraud was on all the talk shows, doing interviews and movie deals are being discussed. All the while knowing he was going to do battle with the FBI.

It's that or tell no one and melt down the history, would be sad as the history and story would be lost, and we wouldn't be discussing it here.

Under the Treasure Trove laws the finder of lost treasures even if on Government land instead of private land still would get one half the value of the treasure. If found on private property you would get even less of the value of the treasure because you would have to give the landowner one half of your one half of the whole more if the landowner wants a different percentage. I would rather deal with the government upon the recovery of a treasure than a local landowner. I have the treasure trove laws from the GSI (Governmental Services) and I also have the treasure trove laws from the State of Virginia.
The story of the gold in Pennsylvania only surfaced the mid to late 1960's, there is no record either in the Soldier and Sailors Data Base nor in the OR (Official Records of the War of the Rebellion) that story was made up for about $60 in a National Treasure Magazine. Then Sculley in Pennsylvania picked up the story in the early 1970's and embellished the story more. I researched the story when it first came out and dropped it all together as there is no historical records behind the story. I also have the Confederate Treasury by-laws of how and by whom the assets of the CSA were moved and guarded. There is nothing in the story that is real and there never was a treasure. That treasure would have been escorted by at least an officer with the rank of Major, one or two captains, a couple Lt.'s and at least a squad of 35 soldiers with repeating rifles and or Gatlin Guns. Sorry this a story I tossed away a long long time ago. The towns, roads and creeks did not have those names during the Civil War. There was not even a Dent's Run during the Civil War.

Well said...I believe this is more about getting TV deals and such...if you follow their facebook page...they are trying extremely hard to get a TV show deal and are all about the hype surrounding this to get such deal.

I saw a couple shows they did. One was at the well at New Ross. There once was a treasure at the bottom of that well but it has been recovered now for over 250 years. They told where the cavity was located but when drilled nothing but sand and dirt. Then they did an Oak Island show about some stones with carvings on them. The Island was south of Oak Island and there was a treasure recovered there which could have belonged to Captain Kid or some other pirate. But that treasure was recovered and gone years ago. Two strikes and now Dent's Run is strike three. Nothing found no where.
