Did I find an opal?

I don?t have any idea what this rock might be, but I?m thinking it?s an opal. Any experts can chime in if they want to. I found it at prehistoric trackways national monument along with some shell fossils and some trackways from prehistoric amphibians (no I didn?t take any out of the monument I collected right outside of the boundary of the monument which is BLM lands). Here?s some pictures. The rock on the left is the alleged opal in question. The rocks in red contain trackways from over 290 mya. it really is fun finding these sorta things. I consider the trackways to be some of my best in my collection to date. Any tips on the rock would also be appreciated.

I think it is agate or brown jasper. But I really can't tell. An opal is like an agate that never crystalized. They are made of up to 30% water

An agate might make sense, after all, there were volcanoes here also with tons of igneous rock.

It looks like it could be common opal, or quartz. If you can scratch it with a pocket knife, it's probably opal. Also, opal is quite a bit lighter than quartz. Opal is frequently found in volcanic basalt and ash deposits.

Does your possible opal have the rainbow colors? Here are some opals and you can see the rainbow colors in some. These are jelly opals from Mexico. Gary

No rainbow colors that I see but its a strange colored rock nonetheless. I shone a light through it and it only emits the light itself I don't see any colors popping out.
