Die Hard metal detecting hobby vs passion

I have always considered Metal Detecting to be seasonal I never really thought anyone would subject themselves to freezing temps. I know most of the hot spots around my area the temps were 29 degrees F. It is early in the season so the ground is not that difficult for digging. I decided to take a drive passing by one or two of these hot spots I saw what looked like a family including children all having metal detectors looking as if they are just having a blast of a time. I thought about taking a picture with my phone but feeling I was invading someone's privacy especially with children.
I have never gone out metal detecting in freezing temps fearing I would be thought of as a nut case. While I was watching them out in the field I did not think anything negative instead it was more of admiration then anything I myself loving the hobby.
This without question is the first time I have seen an entire family out in a field with metal detectors. My fascination is what made me decide to post this thread.
Sometimes seeing things for the first time kind of sticks with you for a little while...

I go out in frigid temps I don't care, just dress for it. I don't go when it's 100 degrees though, probably chill out around July August and pick right back up

I hunt in the dead of winter in areas that are tick infested in the warmer months.
no sweat no bugs and the vegetation has died back.

if one is dressed for it, why not go for it. Makes for a good memory at least.
I have a tune I hum when the weather is rough.

Rain, fog, heat, hail, snow, cold (to temps that won't hurt the detector)
A little frosty snow and I still remember these ones.

Sometimes that itch just needs to be scratched.

It's a US 3 Cent.
Sorry for the confusion on the location.
The silver & button were recovered 30 miles NE of Kingston Ontario.

Yes the 3 Pence has a Crown.

I used to be obsessed by the hobby, if I wasn't working, sleeping, or eating, I was detecting. I hunted until the ground froze. Since 2019 after knee surgery and now with rheumatoid arthritis, I still get out, but instead of hunting 8 to 12 hours per day, I only hunt for 2 to 3 hours at a time a few days a month. I have mentored many over the past few years and still visit and hunt with friends I met here in from other states. The passion for the hobby is still there, just less obsessed.

I think it's a lifestyle for some. It's more than a hobby or a sport.

man if I worried about what someone else thought about the way I look when swinging a detector I would never go out at all, just go out there and have fun like the family you seen while driving, that's what metal detecting is supposed to be about (Having FUN)

I do not go out when the Temps start dropping into the 30, that's just to cold for my old bones

I personally love hunting in the cold.... and the wet.
As i primarily hunt temperate forest areas it makes moving around a lot easier, with less vegetation,, perhaps off-set by the leaf coverage on the ground.. Also less people to happen upon during the chilly months.

year round for me just have the gear for the conditions. do beaches and the Chesapeake bay june july and aug.dont like fighting brush high temps in summer.Plus the ground is so hard in summer here.I will do water hunts in winter too water is alot clearer in winter
