Does anyone know what caused this damage? Is it possibly a terminal die state?

It almost looks like dried clear glue my wife gets nickels in the mail that have glue on them from being stuck to the paper. I don't know why companies do that. Or it could have been in a gift card for a birthday?

It definitely isn't glue, it's part of the nickel but, thanks for your feedback.

I'm going to say glue on the coin....a quick soak in acetone will tell the tale, my guess is it will come off
Not glue, the odd place on Jeffersons head are grooved into the coin, not raised up.

Is the area depressed into the coin or are they raised?

I can't find any nickel references online to a plating? It just says 75% copper, 25% nickle.
